Our knowledgeable staff can help guide you through picking the perfect paint color and help you get everything you need to get the job done right, but here is a look at what we’ll recommend you have on hand:
Paint
The most obvious item you need for a painting project is, of course, paint! When choosing paint, consider the type of finish you want (flat, eggshell, semi-gloss, etc.), the color you want, and the type of surface you will be painting (walls, trim, ceiling, etc.).
Color samples can help you decide on a color before you spend hours painting. Different rooms have different lighting, so we recommend purchasing a sample paint can of the color you are interested in and painting little patches on a few spots in the room. This will help you get a feel for if the color you’re choosing is the right fit before you spend time painting the entire space.
Primer
One of the most important steps you can take before you start to paint is to prime the walls. Primer helps to create a blank canvas for paint and can improve adhesion, durability, and color. Having a blank canvas is important when painting because it will help your paint color show up evenly. Choose a primer that is suitable for the type of paint you will be using and the type of surface you will be painting. Primer also blocks stains from showing through your paint color and can help seal spackle/mud from drywall.

Paintbrushes and/or Rollers
Paint brushes come in a variety of sizes and styles, and choosing the right one can make a big difference in the final result. For example, a 2-inch brush is great for painting trim and other small areas, while a 4-inch brush is better for larger areas like walls. You may also want to invest in a roller and roller cover for a smoother finish on walls.
Â
Smoother surfaces may require smaller nap rollers, but a rougher texture will need larger nap covers. The thickness of the nap determines how much material there is on the roller that carries paint. The more the material, the more paint it can carry and the better it will handle heavier wall texture. Choosing the correct nap roller or best paint brush can help boost the look of the final appearance.
Paint Trays
A paint tray is essential for holding your paint and making it easier to dip your brush or roller into the paint. Look for a paint tray with a grate that separates the paint from the excess, making it easier to clean up after your project is complete.Â
Â
In addition to a paint tray, you might want to consider purchasing an easy to handle paint bucket that fits in your hand. These aren’t necessary, but they do make any painting you’ll be doing with a brush easier.
Drop Cloths
Drop cloths are essential for protecting your flooring and furniture while you paint. Look for heavy-duty, reusable drop cloths that will stay in place as you move around the room.
For most of us, spills are inevitable somewhere. If the paint is still wet and is a latex based paint, you likely can clean it up with some warm, soapy water. Dried paint might need a dried latex paint remover.
Painter's Tape
Painter’s tape is a must-have for protecting trim, baseboards, and other areas that you don’t want to get paint on. Choose a high-quality, masking tape that is specifically designed for painting.
Â
While not necessary, a masking tape dispenser can help make the taping job faster and easier. Also, make sure you don’t leave your tape on too long, the best time to remove painters tape is before the new paint has completely dried.Â
Spackling Paste or Joint Compound
If you have holes or cracks in the walls, you’ll need spackling paste or joint compound to fill them in. Choose a product that is specifically designed for filling in gaps and cracks, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
Sandpaper or Sanding Sponge
If you need to sand the walls or other surfaces before painting, you’ll need sandpaper or a sanding sponge. Look for fine-grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge for best results.
Â
Ready to use texture can help you continue to have a uniform texture on your walls and camouflage any repairs or patches. This spray on product makes touch ups a breeze. Just spray like spray paint and let dry.
